Mahayāna Vipaśyanā One: The Art of Effortless Concentration
The Art of Effortless Concentration
True concentration is not a matter of struggle; it arises naturally when we touch the deepest seeds in our store consciousness—our fundamental aspiration for awakening (bodhicitta). In this talk, Thay explores the “pregnancy of practice,” explaining that when we are “carrying” a deep desire to love and understand, mindfulness flows without effort through every everyday activity.
Thay illuminates the journey from seed to fruit through the Five Particular Mental Formations:
- desire 欲 (chanda)
- determination 勝解 (adhimokṣa)
- mindfulness 念 (smṛti)
- concentration 定 (samādhi)
- understanding 慧 (prajñā)
Using the metaphor of the gardener (mind consciousness) and the garden (store consciousness), Thay teaches us to entrust our practice or kōan to the depths of our being, allowing it to be nourished 24 hours a day.
The talk concludes with the practice of walking meditation as a collective gift. By acting as “bells of mindfulness” for one another and wearing the reminder “I walk for you,” we support the Sangha’s presence. Through a traditional water-blessing liturgy invoking Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, Thay shows us how to transform the very earth beneath our feet into a Pure Land, here and now.
