Self-Care in the Helping Professions

Thay teaches that the practice of Sangha is the practice of happiness, healing and transformation. We are encouraged to take refuge in the Sangha because it contains the energy of the Buddha and the Dharma and it supports and guides our practice and brings us joy. After introducing several verses of the “Fifty Verses on the Nature of Consciousness” in previous talks in this retreat, Thay introduces the ninth verse: everything is of the nature to be both individual and collective.
Thay describes the six realms: gods, asuras (angry spirits), human, animal, hungry ghost and hell with a detailed teaching on hungry ghosts. Thay ends the talk with instructions for managing anger mindfully.
This is the fifth talk in a series of eight given during the Opening the Door to Healing & Transformation retreat, on the teachings of Buddhist psychology, in the year 1997. Thay offered this talk in Key West, Florida, in the United States.
