Our Challenge
Since the 1980s, the dilapidated farm buildings of Plum Village France Monastery’s Upper Hamlet have been bootstrapped and self-built with the loving hands of volunteers and residents.
As we continue to offer spiritual sanctuary to more people every year, our shared home and land are coming under tremendous strain. We lack sufficient indoor spaces and community activity hubs to host transformative retreats year-round and in all weathers.
Today, many dorms and facilities no longer meet new, strict European code requirements. The authorities have given us five years to work to bring Upper Hamlet up to standard. We need to show progress every year.

Our Immediate Needs
A total of 60 new building code-compliant beds in ecological housing, including 9 multi-purpose retreat spaces
Creating newly defined entrance and welcoming courtyard
Restoring the old 19th Century “Harmony Barn” as a community hub, with activity spaces, guest dorms, and facilities for campers
With your help, Plum Village will continue to serve as a home for our monastic and lay residents, a training ground for aspirants, a refuge for retreatants, a laboratory for envisioning fresh ways to share the Dharma, and a place of pilgrimage because of Thay’s indelible mark on this special place.
