Br Phap Huu gives the opening talk of the Rains retreat on September the 17th, 2019, in the New Hamlet of Plum Village. He describes the history and spirit of the rains retreat since it started at the time of the Buddha. He tells a story of Thay and his reactions during an emergency. All our practices of sitting and walking help us to stay stable in difficult situations.
He goes through our basic practices of listening, speaking, eating, walking, breathing and sitting as well as other Plum Village practices of Beginning Anew, the 5 Mindfulness Trainings, chanting, studying, looking deeply, and stopping. During the rains retreat, we will look deeply into three topics, generating individual and collective Bodhicitta, taking care of Mother Earth and Sangha building. We will discuss how local sanghas can be in harmony with the Plum Village practices. As a rapidly growing Sangha, we also need to be aware of our collective capacity, and know the essence of our service and not overstretch ourselves.
